I know there is software to clean up hard drives and make data unrecoverable, but my question about a potential alternative method. If I wasn't so concerned about a particular file itself, but the information contained in the file then wouldn't it be enough just to open the file, alter it, save it, and then delete it? So that if it was ever recovered it would be the altered file that is recovered? For example, say I had a document giving directions to a buried treasure. Say I've encrypted this file, but I still have the unencrypted version that I want to get rid of. Couldn't I just open it in microsoft word, change the street names and coordinates, and then save it again, thereby having the new info written over the old info? Could I do the same with an image file? Opening it in a photo editing program, painting over certain areas, and saving it again? Or do entirely new files just get written each time I save an edit, while the original file stays unaltered?
Not sure what you are asking so I'm just going to give a general cover on the subject. Think of that file, rather the the drive that file is written on as a steel sheet. Now you're taking a stamping tool and writing an image/text on that steel sheet. When you lift that stamping tool and the image/text is there so too is the same mass that was there before you pressed an image/text in that sheet of steel. The mass/material that was push away to allow for the image/text to appear in its place has not only been pushed away where you can see it but throughout the thickness of the steel mass has been moved where you cannot see it. If you could take a steel sheet the thickness of a piece of paper and peel it away in 100 layers you could find you text/image on every layer. Even though if you flipped the sheet over you would see no evidence of what you had stamped. The same would be true if the sheet of steel was a foot thick. When you write files on a computer it is the exact same thing. When you have run out of memory you have run out of space to write on. Erasing "grinds the surface" where the file is written then resettles the mass so it can be used again as a blank surface. However in the under layer everything that has been done is still there because that part is not effected when the file (what is visible on the surface) is erased. As far as creating a new file. When you alter a file all the information contain in the file goes with it as well. If the information was once there it's still there. The way to protect the information in a file is to 1. Change the file; like you have a photo of a naked girl and you want to put clothes on her 2. print the file; print a photo 3; scan the photo to a new file; Now the information that was in the original file where she was naked is not in this file. Hopefully somewhere in there is the answer to your question

Make sure you configure DTA to save the links and not the pictures (because the pictures are the thumbnails). I know that sounds slightly counter-intuitive but trust me-- I made the same mistake when someone first tipped me off about DTA and then finally figured it out on my own much later. Also once you have that set correctly make sure it's filtering all the non-image garbage you don't want. Just play with the setting and you'll get it. Here I even took a screenshot for you because I'm a really cool guy.

Does anyone know a program that will store all the calls (the actual phone calls, not the number called) and texts msgs on the phone so I can DL them later? The phone is an iphone 4s. I think the GF is cheating on me and need proof. I charge her phone on my PC so getting the program on the phone and DL'ing the data from the phone would be easy. I just need a program that can do it. It would need to run in stealth mode obviously and store the data somewhere she would not look.
I do know of such a program, you would know of it as we'll if you searched in google instead of searching here in this forum. If you have a Mac, theres a program called iExplorer that will show all of the texts, the call log, and the voicemail on your computer. You can also save these to your computer. Recording calls is harder because it's a legal issue.
