OP I think is paraphrasing Z. Sitchin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitchin)-- who has a set of awesome and hilarious books on this subject. His work was the most creative and has really seeped into the collective unconscious influencing a lot of books and movies. But if you read the books they're nonsense. This theory seems to make sense superficially but when you take a close look all the connections are nonsense-- facts and ideas are absurdly fudged and conflated. However, I have met a frighteningly large amount of folks who believe every word.
